Vertigo

Holy crap. I picked a great movie to start out with for this blog. It's Hitchcocktober at my local film center, and I can't wait to see 11 movies of his in the next 30 days. But Vertigo is everything I thought it would be, after being regarded as one of the best all time, and then some. I saw the 70mm restored version on film. I could see one of the twists a mile off, but likely because everyone else copied this film, but the very ending threw me for a loop. Most movies don't end on such notes anymore and it is wildly refreshing to see a movie by a director who isn't afraid to leave things hanging. The acting is superb, the directing and cinematography are on point. While I haven't seen every Hitchcock film, I will get close after this month, if you haven't seen Vertigo, go see it as soon as possible and enjoy what is arguably one of the greatest movies of all time. 4/4.

If you liked the first, you will like the second. If you didn’t, don’t go see this movie. Kingsman is an action movie that doesn’t have that much in the way of plot. The fight scenes are amazing, the camera work is stunning, and most of the acting is good. The plot is ridiculus, but it isn’t meant to be. This movie knows what it is and doesn’t try to be anything more. So if you want an action movie that you can watch and see some amazing gun fight scenes, go see this movie. If you want a compelling plot and characters you care about, don’t. There is one very moving scene that makes you care about the characters, and it comes from arguably the best 3 actors in the movie, which were in the 1 st , and a sacrifice, but one compelling point doesn’t make up for a otherwise lacking plot. 2.5/4

American Made

I was hesitant about this movie. Tom Cruise can be hit or miss in my opinion. I love him in (some of) the Mission Impossible movies and in Edge of Tomorrow (go see that movie), but he sucked in The Mummy and lacked charisma in Rock of Ages. Tom Cruise brought some of his best acting to this movie. He provided a likability to a character that is kind of a dick. And he brought humanity and charisma to a person few of us have ever heard of. The rest of the acting was acceptable, nothing great, but this was a single character driven movie and the rest didn’t need to be perfect. The plot was fairly predictable and wasn’t anything new. The direction and photography was good, the highlight was some of the flying scenes that were stunning, which tragically lead to some deaths during filming. I would go see this movie if you like Tom Cruise or want to see an easy to follow but good movie. 3/4
